On April 2nd a team of veterinarians and technicians headed by Dr. Barrie Grant, working as a team with veterinarians and technicians from the Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital, performed "wobbler surgery" on Seattle Slew. The surgery was performed at the Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Ky. Dr. John Hubbell from The Ohio State University performed the anesthesia. The surgical procedure involves the implantation of a threaded stainless steel between the affected vertebrae (the 6th and 7th cervical) to hasten fusion and thus reduce the spinal canal narrowing as the surrounding bone atrophies. The procedure took 75 minutes and he laid quietly in the recovery room for another 75 minutes. He stood on his first attempt and was back in his stall 20 minutes later. The following pictoral essay shows the myelogram, surgical preparation and procedure and Seattle Slew after his recovery.
